Can online therapy be as effective as face to face therapy?
The increasing prevalence of online therapy raises questions about its comparability to traditional face-to-face therapy and, most importantly, its efficacy.
For some, the idea of establishing a therapeutic relationship solely through online means may spark skepticism. Concerns may arise regarding the depth of connection achievable without the physical presence of a therapist. This topic has gained significant attention from researchers, particualrly in in recent years in the wake of COVID.
For instance, a study by Etzelmuller and colleagues (2018) explored the effectiveness of online self-help cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) combined with video-based CBT compared to face-to-face therapy. Their findings revealed that participants generally perceived their online therapy experience as effective, citing conveniences such as flexibility in location and accessibility. Moreover, they rated it as equally effective as traditional face-to-face therapy.
In another study, Carlbringer et al. (2017) analysed 20 studies comparing the efficacy of online CBT with traditional face-to-face interventions. Their findings suggested that online interventions produced similar overall effects to those of face-to-face therapy.
In 2022, Moeller et al conducted a systematic review of the evidence from 11 studies to find that the satisfaction and acceptance of video sessions in mental health services is comparable with in person sessions.
One of the primary advantages of online therapy is its enhanced accessibility. By eliminating the need for physical visits, online therapy addresses barriers such as geographical remoteness or limited access to mental health services. And the comfort of one's environment plays a crucial role in the therapeutic process. While some individuals find solace in the clinical setting of a therapist's office, others may feel more at ease exploring emotional challenges from the safety of their homes. The familiar surroundings and personal objects in one's space can anchor individuals, making it easier to delve into deeper emotional work.
Online therapy also offers a viable option for individuals hesitant to access local services due to perceived stigma or a lack of specialised therapists. When selecting and connecting with a therapist, finding the right fit is crucial, and this may not always be readily available locally..
Ultimately, successful therapy involves building a meaningful relationship. Whether it be in-person or online, the key is to establish a connection that fosters meaningful change.
